Its name comes very likely from the Latin word “finis terrae”, as It was the farthest eastern border of the Cozii (Cottian Alps people) kingdom. Nevertheless we shall not discard the hypothesis that the name originated from the habit of building very small windows, due to the municipal tax weighing on them In the past. The stately fortifications complex known with the name of Forte di Fenestrelle (Fortress of Fenestelle), has now become a significant artistic and cultural destination, which attracts International tourism; the same applies to the “Environmental education centre of Pra Catinat”, which organises training and recreational activities. This Is evidence of the strategic Importance that the village can now boast. The municipality Includes 8 Inhabited areas: Mentoulles, Depot, Chambons, Puy, Granges, Pequerel, Champs and Ville Cloze.
