There are two different ways of thinking with regard
to the origin of the village name, both agree that
It takes Its name from a dialect word, but the first
ascribes It to péiríe (stony ground)
and the other to prìe (ventricle, to Indicate
that Perrero Is the valley "belly"). At
the beginning of 1700 It was the "Capital city"
of the Serene Republic of the Val San Martino,
Pomaretto, Inverso Pinasca and Chianaviere,
also called Salt Republic, and during
the Napoleonic occupation was the valley main administrative
centre. For many centuries the valley was named
after the panoramic area called San Martino, which
can boast the oldest church In the valley. The native
house of Lidia Poët, the first Italian female
lawyer In history, Is still In Traverse. |
