Formerly called “Ad Portas”, It takes Its name and Importance from Its strategic position. Completely surrounded by mountains, It guards the entrance to the low Chisone valley. The Inhabited area follows the course of the stream, adjoining the national road no. 23, and then narrows off the Malanaggio (de Malasorte) gorge, which In the past was regarded as a dreadful area due to the frequent ambushes and was known for the old Gneiss quarries.
The bell tower of the San Michele Archangel baroque church stands out In the centre of the village, while a few hundreds metres further rises the beautiful Villa Giuliano, seat of the municipal offices, which overlooks the national road and Is surrounded by a park, where you can appreciate undoubtedly valuable trees.
Not to forget, the area of S. Benedetto and the Fontana degli Alpini, (Fountain named after the Italian alpine troops), featuring gorgeous landscapes, as well as the sport facilities by the Malanaggio area.

 

Grissini stirati
The traditional "Grissini Stirati" (breadsticks) of Porte are handmade and do not include fats, oil, preserving or Improving additives among their Ingredients, they are just made according to tradition. These grissini are prepared manually by making thin empty sticks, that are very light and can reach 150 cm. While cooking they bend and turn dark gold.
